The second in a two-semester progression of First-Year Composition, this course offers students practice in critical reading, primary and secondary research, and research writing. As a service-learning course, students will also engage in scholarship and production that serves a community need.
For the Spring 2011 semester, we will engage the broad topic of educational equity, considering cultural competence, diversity and inclusion here on ECU’s campus as well as our region’s legacy of segregation and desegregation, thinking about how these phenomena shape our educational reality. We’ll explore our reading, writing, thinking, collaborating and knowledge-making practices and think about how these are impacted by our cultural assumptions and worldviews. We’ll investigate these issues together and share information and insights that make us better readers and writers as we develop and explore equity in education and its impacts.
